You are out on the highway in your Peterbilt, perhaps pulling a full load in a classic 389 or cruising in a modern, aerodynamic 579. Suddenly, you notice that the ride just does not feel right. Maybe the steering wheel is vibrating more than usual, or perhaps every time you hit a small bridge joint, the whole cab feels like it is going to shake itself apart.

To a driver, these are the red flags of a suspension system that has seen better days. Over the last 25 years, Peterbilt has transitioned from heavy-duty steel leaf springs to some of the most sophisticated air-ride and electronically monitored systems in the world. While this has made the ride smoother, it has also made the symptoms of failure more nuanced.

As a technician, I see these rigs every day. Here is how to translate what you are feeling in the seat into a technical diagnosis that keeps your truck on the road.

1. The Leaning Tower Effect

You walk up to your rig in the morning and notice the trailer is sitting two inches lower on the left than the right, or the tractor itself looks lopsided. In the early 2000s, this was almost always a simple mechanical leveling valve issue.

On modern PACCAR systems like the Low Air Leaf or AirTrac, it is often more complex. If you see a lean, you are likely dealing with:

  • A leaking air bag (bellows).
  • A failed height control valve.
  • A puncture or dry rot in the air lines.

Why it matters: This is a high-priority fix. When one side loses pressure, the other side works double-time to support the weight. This leads to a catastrophic air bag blowout when you hit a significant pothole under a full load.

2. The Never-Ending Bounce

If your truck feels like a boat in a storm every time you hit a dip in the road, your shock absorbers have likely surrendered. On a Flex Air system, the shocks are specifically tuned to work in tandem with the air springs to stabilize the chassis. When the shocks fail, the air bags do all the lifting but none of the dampening.

This creates a pogo stick effect that wears out your tires unevenly (known as cupping) and causes extreme driver fatigue because you are constantly fighting to keep the truck steady. If you notice oil weeping down the side of the shock absorber body, the seal is blown and it is time for a replacement.

3. The Wandering Axle (Dog-Tracking)

If you feel like you are dog-tracking—where the trailer does not seem to follow perfectly behind the tractor—or you are constantly correcting the steering on a straight, flat road, your torque rods or bushings are likely the culprits.

These components are responsible for keeping the axles squared to the frame. On Peterbilts from the 2010s and later, lightweight suspension arms and high-strength bushings are used to save weight and improve fuel economy. However, when these bushings perish, the axle can physically shift forward or backward. This is a severe safety issue because it ruins your alignment and can shred expensive tires in a matter of a few hundred miles.

4. Vocational Groans and Clunks

For drivers operating a 567 or the new 589 in construction or logging environments, the symptoms are often more audible. If you hear a heavy metal-on-metal clunking or groaning when turning or navigating uneven terrain, your walking beam bushings or spring pins are likely worn out.

In these heavy-duty mechanical setups, those noises are a warning that the load is no longer being distributed evenly across the axles. Ignoring a groan in a walking beam suspension can lead to a snapped leaf spring or a cracked housing, which are significantly more expensive than a standard bushing kit.

5. Modern Electronic Gremlins (2021–2026)

As we approach the 2026 models, suspension is increasingly integrated with electronic stability controls. You might notice the truck feels fine, but you are getting unexpected stability warnings or automatic braking interventions on off-ramps.

Modern Peterbilts use sensors to monitor ride height and axle loading. A mechanical lean or a failing air management sensor can trick the onboard computer into thinking the vehicle is in a roll-over situation. This triggers the Predictive Ride Management or automated load leveling to overcompensate, leading to a confusing and potentially dangerous driving experience.

Technician Advice for the Shop Floor

When you sit down to talk to your mechanic, being specific about when the symptoms occur can save hours of diagnostic labor. Note the following:

  • Does the truck lean only when it is loaded?
  • Does the air compressor kick on more frequently than it used to?
  • Do you feel the vibration in the floor (rear suspension) or the steering wheel (front axle)?

Whether you are running a 20-year-old AirTrac system or a brand-new electronically monitored PACCAR rear-end, the suspension is the backbone of your operation. It stands between your cargo and the punishing reality of the road. Treat those small squeaks and leans with respect, and your Peterbilt will keep rolling for another million miles.
