How to Fix Understeer on a Race Car
In the world of amateur racing, few things are more frustrating than understeer. Often called "pushing" or "plowing," understeer is that heart-sinking moment when you turn the steering wheel toward the apex, but the car insists on heading straight for the grass on the outside of the turn.
While it is tempting to jump online and order a set of expensive coilovers the moment you feel the front end sliding, that is rarely the most efficient or cheapest way to get faster. For grassroots racers on a budget, the goal is to maximize the equipment you already have.
This guide outlines a systematic, step-by-step approach to diagnosing and fixing understeer, starting with free adjustments and moving toward mechanical changes.
1. Start with the Driver: Are You Over-Driving?
The most common cause of understeer in amateur racing isn't a bad setup; it is entry speed. If you dive into a corner too fast or brake too late, you are asking the front tires to do two monumental tasks simultaneously: slow the car down and change its direction. This overloads the contact patch and results in a slide.
The "Slow In, Fast Out" Test
To determine if the driver or the car is the problem, try this: For one session, brake 10 to 15 feet earlier than usual. Focus on getting the car turned in smoothly. If the understeer disappears and you find yourself able to get on the throttle earlier, your handling problem was actually just excessive entry speed.
Use Trail Braking
If the car feels "lazy" at turn-in, try trail braking. Instead of finishing all your braking in a straight line, stay on the brakes very lightly (about 5% to 10% pressure) as you begin to turn the wheel. This keeps the weight shifted onto the front tires, compressing the suspension and increasing the size of the front contact patches, which helps the car rotate.

2. Tire Pressures: The Easiest Tool in Your Box
Tires are the only part of the car that actually touches the track. If your pressures are wrong, nothing else you do to the suspension will matter. You should check your pressures when the tires are cold and monitor them immediately after you come off the track.
- Under-inflation: If the front tires do not have enough air, the sidewalls will "roll over" during hard cornering. You can check this by looking at the "scuff marks" on your tire after a session. Most racing tires have small triangles or pips on the shoulder. If you are wearing the rubber past those marks, increase your front pressure.
- Over-inflation: If the pressure is too high, the tire "crowns," and only the center of the tread makes contact. This reduces your total grip and can lead to a greasy, sliding feeling as the tires overheat.
Pro Tip: Use a tire pyrometer (a probe-style thermometer) if you have access to one. If the middle of the tire is significantly hotter than the edges, your pressure is too high. If the edges are hotter than the center, it is too low.

3. Alignment: Maximizing the Contact Patch
Alignment has a massive impact on cornering behavior. Most street cars come with neutral or even positive camber for stability and even tire wear. For racing, you almost always need negative camber.
Negative Camber
When a car leans into a corner, the body rolls. Negative camber (tilting the tops of the tires inward toward the center of the car) ensures that as the car leans, the outside tire flattens out against the pavement.
If you are experiencing mid-corner understeer, try adding 0.5 to 1.0 more degrees of negative camber to the front. This is often the single most effective mechanical change you can make, though you must stay within the rules of your specific racing class.
Toe Settings
Adding a small amount of toe-out (the front of the tires pointing away from each other) can help the car "dart" into a corner more aggressively. However, be careful: too much toe-out can make the car feel unstable or "twitchy" on high-speed straights and will accelerate tire wear.
4. Adjusting Sway Bars (Anti-Roll Bars)
If technique and alignment haven't solved the issue, it is time to look at the sway bars. The general rule for fixing understeer is: Soften the front or stiffen the rear.
- Soften the Front Bar: A softer front bar allows the front wheels to move more independently and helps the tires stay in contact with the road rather than being pulled up by the opposite wheel.
- Stiffen the Rear Bar: A stiffer rear bar reduces the rear-end grip relative to the front. This forces the rear to resist roll more than the front, which encourages the car to "rotate" or pivot around its center.
The Tradeoff: If you make the rear too stiff, you might end up with "snappy" oversteer, where the back of the car slides out suddenly. Make small adjustments—if your bar is adjustable, move the end link by just one hole at a time.

5. Springs and Shocks
Changing springs and shocks should be a last resort. These adjustments are usually about managing weight transfer during the transition phases of a corner.
- Entry Understeer: If the car pushes specifically when you turn the wheel at the start of a corner (turn-in), your front shocks might be too stiff, preventing the weight from loading onto the front tires quickly enough.
- Exit Understeer: If the car pushes as you apply throttle to leave the corner, your rear springs might be too soft. This causes the nose to lift too much as the car "squats," taking weight and grip off the front tires.
The One Change Rule
The biggest mistake grassroots racers make is changing three things at once. If you change your tire pressure, your camber, and your sway bars in the same session, you will have no idea which one worked—or if two of them are fighting each other.
Always make one adjustment at a time. Record the change in a notebook, along with the track temperature, tire pressures, and your subjective feeling of the car. This turns your track day into a learning process rather than a guessing game.

- Check Entry Speed: Are you simply going too fast for the tires to hold the line?
- Adjust Driving Line: Try trail braking to keep weight on the nose through the turn-in phase.

By following this order, you will avoid spending money on parts you do not need and develop the most important racing component of all: the driver.
