Ford Axle Seal Service Protocol
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify labor-intensive teardown requirements based on axle configuration.
- Inspect mating surfaces for scoring or wear grooves before installation.
- Verify seal integrity through controlled operation and fluid level checks.
Axle Seal Service Protocol
Ford axle seal accessibility depends on drivetrain layout. Front IFS systems require pulling CV half-shafts. Rear solid axles may require removing hub assemblies or differential C-clips. Labor costs reflect the extensive teardown required to access the housing bore. High-precision extraction and installation are mandatory to prevent fluid bypass.

- Remove wheels, calipers, and rotors to clear the workspace.
- Extract the axle shaft using appropriate pullers to avoid component damage.
- Remove the old seal without marring the metal housing bore.
- Inspect the shaft sealing surface for grooves, rust, or pitting.
- Press the new seal into place using a driver for flush seating.
- Reinstall components and refill lubricant to manufacturer-specified levels.

Worn shaft surfaces destroy new seals. If grooving exists, install a repair sleeve or replace the shaft immediately. Verify the repair by cleaning the area and checking for fresh fluid after a test cycle.
Pro-Tip: Lubricate the seal lip with gear oil before installation to prevent dry-start friction and immediate seal failure.
