To ensure claim approval and minimize administrative "chargebacks," technical narratives must transition from qualitative storytelling to parameter-driven documentation. This guide establishes the standard for documenting EPS failures through the Three C’s methodology, ensuring every claim is audit-ready upon submission.



1. CONCERN: Defining the Symptom

The Concern must bridge the gap between the customer’s subjective experience and the vehicle’s objective state. Vague descriptions such as "steering feels weird" or "customer says it's hard to turn" are insufficient for warranty reimbursement.

Documentation Requirements:

  1. Environmental Conditions: Identify specific speeds (MPH/KPH), steering angles, or temperatures when the fault occurs.
  2. System Indicators: Record all "Steering Assist Fault" or "Service Power Steering" messages displayed on the Driver Information Center (DIC).
  3. DTC Logging: List all active and stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

Narrative Example: Customer states heavy steering effort and "Steering Assist Fault" message on DIC. Technician found active DTC C0545 (Steering Wheel Torque Sensor Signal) in the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM).


2. CAUSE: Quantitative Diagnostic Evidence

The Cause section must provide objective proof of failure. Auditors will reject claims that use the term "internal failure" without supporting data. The diagnostic path must systematically isolate the EPS rack from the rest of the steering and electrical system.

Diagnostic Step Requirements:

  1. Electrical Integrity: Perform a battery load test and charging system analysis. Low system voltage frequently triggers false PSCM codes.
  2. Circuit Testing: Use a digital multimeter (DMM) to verify 12V supply and ground integrity at the EPS rack main connector.
  3. Live Data Analysis: Monitor Parameter IDs (PIDs) for the Steering Torque Sensor and Motor Current.
  4. Mechanical Isolation: To prove an internal rack failure such as binding or noise, the technician must disconnect outer tie rods to isolate the rack from the strut bearings and ball joints.

Technical Parameter Examples:

  1. Observed Torque Sensor Voltage at a static 0.0V despite 5Nm of input force (Normal range: 2.1V to 2.9V).
  2. Verified 14.2V at EPS main power feed; ground resistance measured at 0.2 Ohms.
  3. With tie rods disconnected, internal mechanical binding was confirmed during manual rack travel.


3. CORRECTION: Execution and Validation

The Correction must demonstrate that the repair followed OEM-sanctioned procedures and that the system was successfully recalibrated. References to specific Service Manual sections or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) are mandatory.

Standardized Repair Sequence:

  1. De-power System: Disconnect high-current power supply to the EPS assembly and secure the wiring harness.
  2. Component Replacement: Remove and replace the EPS Gear Assembly (P/N 84332-S) following Service Manual Procedure 14-E-20.
  3. Hardware Compliance: Install new one-time-use mounting bolts; torque to 110 Nm plus 90 degrees as per OEM specifications.
  4. Software Calibration: Perform Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) Centering and Torque Sensor Calibration using the OEM scan tool.
  5. Final Validation: Clear all DTCs and perform a verification road test, including full lock-to-lock turns, to ensure no return of fault messages.


Audit Prevention and Technical Precision

To minimize the "Economy of Language" gap and satisfy OEM auditors, adhere to the following linguistic standards and critical documentation rules.

  4. Measurement Accuracy: Replace qualitative adjectives like "very loose" or "excessive noise" with quantitative data such as "measured 0.075 inch radial runout" or "recorded 85dB at 2,000 RPM."
