Diagnosing Strut Mount and Bearing Failure
Imagine you are pulling into a tight parking spot at the grocery store or slowly navigating your driveway. As you turn the steering wheel, you hear a distinct popping, creaking, or even a crunching sound coming from the front of your car. It sounds almost like a heavy metal spring under tension is suddenly snapping into place.
Then, as you complete your turn and accelerate away, you notice something even more unsettling: the steering wheel does not want to return to the center position on its own. You have to physically pull it back to the straight-ahead position. To most drivers, this feels like the car is fighting them, or as if the steering has suddenly become lazy or sticky.
While many owners might immediately fear that their expensive power steering pump or steering rack is failing, the culprit is often much higher up in the wheel well. We are talking about the strut mount and its internal bearing.

The Tech Talk: What is a Strut Mount?
From a technical standpoint, the strut mount is the critical interface between your vehicle’s suspension system and its chassis. In a standard MacPherson strut setup, which is found on most modern cars and SUVs, the strut assembly does not just move up and down to absorb bumps; it must also rotate whenever you turn the steering wheel.
The strut mount serves two primary purposes:
- Insulation: It uses a heavy-duty rubber cushion to prevent road vibrations and harsh tire noise from transferring into the cabin.
- Rotation: It houses a specialized bearing that allows the entire strut assembly to pivot smoothly as the steering knuckle turns.
The Breakdown: Two Ways Things Go Wrong
When these components fail, they usually do so in one of two ways: rubber isolation failure or bearing seizure.
1. Rubber Separation
The rubber portion of the mount is constantly subjected to the weight of the vehicle and the friction of the road. Over time, this rubber can dry out, crack, or completely separate from the metal mounting plate. When this happens, the strut stem is no longer held securely. This typically results in clunking sounds over bumps and a loss of precise wheel alignment, making the car feel loose or unsettled.
2. Bearing Seizure (The "Popping" Culprit)
The popping and memory steer symptoms mentioned earlier are almost always caused by the bearing. These bearings are often made of plastic or thin metal races filled with small ball bearings. Because of their location at the top of the wheel well, they are constantly pelted with road salt, water, and grime.
Eventually, the lubrication inside the bearing dries up or becomes contaminated with grit. Instead of spinning freely, the bearing begins to bind. When you turn the wheel, the large coil spring on your strut actually twists and builds up tension because the bearing won't let it rotate. When that tension becomes too high, the spring jumps to catch up, creating that audible popping sound. This binding also prevents your steering wheel from self-centering—a condition we technicians call memory steer, where the car wants to keep turning in the direction of the last corner you took.

The Driveway Test: How to Spot a Bad Mount
If you suspect your mounts are failing, there is a simple diagnostic procedure you can perform with a partner:
- The Visual Observation: With the car parked and the engine running, have your partner turn the steering wheel from lock to lock (all the way left, then all the way right).
- What to Look For: Safely observe the upper strut towers under the hood. You should see a smooth rotation of the center bolt.
- Warning Signs: If you see the rubber bulging excessively, or if you hear a pop that coincides with a visible jerk in the coil spring, the bearing is seized.
- The Orange Dust: Look for visible gaps in the rubber or orange-colored dust around the mount. This dust is actually pulverized rust from a disintegrating bearing.
Expert Advice: Don't Do the Job Twice
The most important advice I can give any vehicle owner is this: treat the strut mount and bearing as integral parts of the strut itself.
If you are having your struts replaced because they are leaking or the ride is bouncy, do not try to save a few dollars by reusing the old mounts. The labor to replace a mount is exactly the same as the labor to replace the strut, as the entire assembly must be removed and compressed. Installing a brand-new strut with a worn, gritty bearing will result in poor steering returnability and will likely require you to pay for the same job twice just a few months down the road.
If your car is exhibiting these symptoms, schedule an inspection sooner rather than later. A binding strut bearing places unnecessary stress on your tie rods and steering rack, and it can significantly alter your wheel alignment, leading to premature tire wear. When you speak with your mechanic, specifically mention the popping at low speeds and the lack of steering self-centering. This will help them zero in on the upper mounts and ensure your vehicle regains that smooth, predictable steering feel you expect.
