Diagnosing Notchy Steering and Intermediate Shaft Binding
Have you ever noticed your steering wheel feeling a bit lumpy or notchy when you are turning into a parking spot or navigating a winding road? Maybe it feels like there is a specific spot in the rotation where the wheel wants to stick or resist, and then it suddenly snaps past it. It is almost like the steering is fighting you back, or it simply is not as fluid as it used to be.
Some drivers describe it as a clicking feeling in their hands, while others notice that the wheel does not naturally return to the center after making a turn, forcing them to manually pull it back to the straight-ahead position. If this sounds familiar, you might be worried that your expensive power steering pump or steering rack is failing. However, as a technician, I often find the culprit is a much smaller, albeit vital, component: the steering intermediate shaft.

The Link Between You and the Road
To understand why your steering is acting up, we have to look at how your input travels from your hands to the tires. The steering intermediate shaft is the mechanical bridge between the steering column inside the cabin and the steering gear (or rack) located down in the chassis.
Because modern engine bays are incredibly cramped, the path from your steering wheel to the ground is rarely a straight line. The shaft has to bend at angles to reach its destination. To achieve this, it utilizes Universal Joints, or U-joints. These joints contain tiny needle bearings packed with grease, allowing the shaft to rotate smoothly even while bent at an angle.
The Root Cause: Rust-Jacking and Corrosion
The problem lies in where these U-joints live. The lower U-joint on the intermediate shaft is often positioned in one of the harshest environments in your entire vehicle. It sits low in the engine bay, where it is constantly bombarded by:
- Road salt and de-icing chemicals.
- Standing water and mud.
- Extreme radiant heat from the nearby exhaust manifold.
Over time, the rubber seals protecting those tiny needle bearings can dry out or crack. Once the seals fail, moisture and road grime seep in, washing away the grease and causing the bearings to corrode. This leads to a phenomenon we call "rust-jacking," where internal corrosion creates so much friction that the joint can no longer pivot freely. That mechanical resistance is exactly what you feel as a binding or notchy sensation in the steering wheel.

How Technicians Diagnose the Bind
When a car comes into the shop with these symptoms, our first job is to distinguish between a failing U-joint and internal resistance within the steering gearbox itself. Replacing a gearbox is expensive and labor-intensive, so we want to be absolutely sure of the diagnosis.
One of our favorite diagnostic tricks is the "spray test." While the vehicle is safely supported on a lift, one technician rotates the steering wheel from lock to lock while another sprays a high-quality penetrating lubricant directly onto the exposed U-joint. If the steering suddenly smooths out and the notchiness vanishes—even if only for a few miles—we have confirmed that the U-joint is the source of the friction.
Don't Overlook the Splines
While inspecting the U-joints, we also check the shaft's sliding splines. Most intermediate shafts are telescopic, meaning they can expand and contract to account for body flex or to protect the driver in a collision. If these splines lose their lubrication or develop excessive play, they can cause a distracting clunking noise when driving over bumps or a subtle popping sensation during low-speed maneuvers.
Is It Safe to Drive?
Ignoring a binding steering shaft is more than just an annoyance; it is a genuine safety risk. A U-joint that is binding today could potentially seize tomorrow. If the joint freezes up during an emergency maneuver, you may find it incredibly difficult to steer the vehicle away from an obstacle.
It is also important to note that topping off your power steering fluid will not fix this. Because the issue is a physical, mechanical bind in the linkage, no amount of fluid or stop-leak additive will reach the needle bearings inside the sealed U-joint.
Actionable Advice for Owners
If your steering is acting erratic, here is how to handle the conversation with your mechanic:
- Describe the Sensation: Use specific words like notchy, binding, or failing to return to center.
- Request a Visual Inspection: Ask them to specifically check the intermediate shaft U-joints for signs of red dust (a sign of rusted bearings) or torn seals.
- Ask for the Spray Test: Mention that you suspect a binding U-joint and ask if they can perform a quick lubrication test to isolate the shaft from the steering rack.
In most cases, these joints are not serviceable or greaseable, meaning the entire intermediate shaft assembly will need to be replaced. While it is an unexpected repair, it is a straightforward job that will restore that factory-smooth steering feel and ensure your vehicle remains predictable and safe on the road. Replacing a worn shaft is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes with precise, effortless control of your vehicle.
